Mick began his class by sharing a quote from Grayson Perry (the Turner prize winning artist): "Until we can insert a USB into our ear and download our thoughts, drawing remains the best way of getting visual information onto the page." That was really inspirational and it perhaps best describes why it is so important for an artist to present his work by drawing. It makes me feel proud in a sense that I am on the journey of finding a way to express myself too.
Mick then shared with us the names and work of sketchbook artists, and the different methods / procedures of making a sketchbook or doing research. He showed us a couple of examples from his past students who made two sketchbooks demonstrating how this could be done beautifully.
We then had the opportunity to practise a sketchbook ourselves by choosing from many items that Mick had brought in, i.e., his son's toys and wall paper samples from Liberty. I made a collage of work named "3 ladies riding a horse in the sky" - representing me and my daughters as they both love horse riding, and my older daughter was born in the year of horse too!
Life drawing with John Close was again, a great experience.
